According to wmflabs.org Wikipedia receives around 7 billion impressions every month. Having a link in a website which receives billions of impressions is really worthwhile. You will get targeted traffic to your website by having a link in Wikipedia.

In this article I am going to show you

  • How to get backlinks from Wikipedia
  • How to get targeted traffic to your website from Wikipedia
  • How to get backlinks from other authoritative websites
  • How to get as many links as possible from Wikipedia

About Wikipedia Authority:

If you are an avid internet user, you might already know about the power of Wikipedia. It ranks for every keyword mostly in top 10 in Google search results. The only bad thing with Wikipedia is that they nofollow all external links in their website. So, you will get absolutely zero domain authority passed from Wikipedia to your website if you earn a link in Wikipedia. The reason why Wikipedia nofollowed all the external links is that they wanted to avoid spammers invading their site for the reason of simply getting a link to their website from Wikipedia.

Then you might wonder, why the heck I care in getting a nofollow link from Wikipedia. The reason is simple, nofollow links are also useful for your website in other ways. Here is the story published at moz blog explaining why nofollow links are equally important. Nofollow links may not increase your domain authority. But, they will be helpful in getting targeted traffic to your website and which may lead to your website conversions.

Apart from that, when you get a backlink from Wikipedia, you will also be able to get backlinks from other authoritative websites, since, many publishers will use Wikipedia as their source of information for their writing needs. So, if a website publisher uses a Wikipedia topic as their source of writing, you can get a backlink from their website if you have a link in that Wikipedia page.

Ways to get backlinks from Wikipedia:

  • Dead link approach method:
Dead link
Dead link

Every website will have dead external links somehow are other. But for Wikipedia with its sheer amount of articles, it will have countless of dead links for sure.

Wikipedia describes a dead link is a link which is no longer active or which leads to a 404 not found page. A dead link in Wikipedia article or in its citation indicates its moderators that this dead link needs to be fixed or should be replaced with a working link.

As a SEO enthusiasts we always strive to get good backlinks to our website in order to increase our blog’s visibility in search engines. Whenever we see a dead link in Wikipedia, its better we first act, in fixing the dead link with our link, so that, we will get relevant backlink and also relevant traffic to our blog.

In fact Wikipedia also don’t want dead links in their website, so they help people like us in giving information about their dead links in their website. You can access the dead links page here.

  • Earning links from Broken Links

One of the best ways to earn a backlink from authoritative websites is by using broken links method. Research websites which are in your niche for broken external links in their website. If you find some broken external links in their website, try to write content in your website which the broken link used to offer and email the website owner saying the following links were broken and your website link can offer the same value which the broken link used to offer.

Then the website owner will gladly consider your suggestion and will replace the broken link with your newly written article link in his website. In this case, both the website owner wins by getting his broken link fixed and you win by getting a free backlink from authoritative website.

Ways to get more backlinks from Wikipedia

By combining the above two methods, you can get more backlinks to your website by using Wikipedia. The process is simple. We can get broken or dead links in Wikipedia easily. Then you can find more backlink sources, by finding the links which are linked to the broken page which you found through Wikipedia and get backlinks from those sources as well with backlink explorer tools.

This method will get you more relevant backlinks and also relevant traffic to your website.

Follow the Steps below to get a backlink from Wikipedia:

Step 1: Search Broken Link

First of all, find the broken links or dead links in Wikipedia with the following advanced Google search query.

Type the following in Google to get information on broken links in Wikipedia.

Site:wikipedia.org “Your Keyword Phrase” “dead link”

Or

Site:wikipedia.org “Your Keyword Phrase” “Citation Needed”

For example take my niche as an example. See below for screenshot.

Example: 1

dead links
dead links

Or with this search query

Example: 2

citation needed
citation needed

In the dead link approach I am using the following result.

dead link

Step 2:

After opening the above result in a new tab in your browser. Press Cntrl + F in your browser and type “dead link” in the search “Citation needed” if you are using the citation query.

wikipedia dead link

Step 3:

Now, you can see the external links which are dead. See below for screenshot.

wikipedia dead link

Step 4:

Next, open Wayback Machine Archive in your web browser. Now, copy the broken link from Wikipedia and paste it in the Way back machine archive search.

In my example, here is the dead link I found via Wikipedia.

http://www.zdnet.com.au/meet-google-s-culture-czar-339275147.htm

I am now, searching the above webpage in Wayback machine archive to see how it used to look earlier.

wayback machine archive

Step 5:

Click on Browse History in order to see how it used to look earlier. After I clicked on Browse History button, I got the following results.

wayback machine archive

Step 6:

Now in this step, I will look at its earlier copies and see if the webpage can fit in my niche. If the webpage is related to my niche, then I will recreate the same topic or similar topic in my website. Or else, I will keep on searching for more dead links until I find a dead link which can fit into my niche.

Step 7:

Now head over to Ahrefs or Majestic Seo to find what other websites which linked to this dead link in the example as shown in the above.

Here in this example I am using Ahrefs tool for my needs. Create a free account if you already don’t have an account with them. Now, after creating an account with them, paste the dead link which you already got from the above and click on Search to see if there are any websites which linked to that page other than Wikipedia.

ahrefs

Luckily, yes there are.

ahrefs

In the above, there are around 126 backlinks for that specified dead link. That means, there are around 126 pages which linked to that dead link and an over 75 domains which actually linked to that deadlink.

With Ahrefs and Majestic, you can also find the pages which used to link this broken link. So, now you have lot of resources to earn good backlinks from authoritative websites.

Step 8:

In this step, by looking at Wayback Machine archive of the broken link which you got from Wikipedia, try to create the same content in our own writing style uniquely. If you already have a similar content which the broken link used to offer, then you can link your existing content in place of the broken link in other websites and also in the Wikipedia page.

Steps for replacing the dead link with your link to get a back link from Wikipedia

Step 1:

Create
a free account with Wikipedia in order to replace the dead links with your own links.

wikipedia signup

Step 2:

In order to escape the Wikipedia moderation radar, you need to edit few articles without using your own link in the first place. Try to help the Wikipedia by editing few broken links by replacing them with legitimate sources. In this way, your account will earn some credits and Wikipedia will give some value to your account as the time passes on. Once your account gets some credibility, then you can edit the broken link of your choice and replace it with your own. This way, your edits will stay longer.

Step 3:

Once, you finished creating an account, you will be shown up with Edit this article option.

wikipedia edit article

Or you can click on Edit at each section in the Wikipedia article to edit the article source code.

Step 4:

From the first example, here is the Wikipedia page where I found the broken link.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google

This page is very popular one, so, Wikipedia restricted editing this article for new users and allowed to accounts which has some editing history. To edit this article, your account should have some editing history. So, for illustration purposes, I am taking another example here.

Take this link as an example in which you can find dead link too.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xenu%27s_Link_Sleuth

The above link is not so popular and I can easily edit this link with no problem. And there is a dead link in it already.

wikipedia references

Step 5:

I am clicking on Edit button at the top to edit the Wikipedia article. After clicking on Edit button, there is an option to switch to Source editing in the top right hand side of your page.

edit source code

Click on Switch to Source Editing to edit the source.

Step 6:

Now, Press Ctrl + F in order to search the phrase dead in the source code. Type dead in the search, to find the dead link in the source code.

dead link

Step 7:

Now, edit the source code with your website page link and don’t forget to write the description and info to the moderators saying Dead link updated with new link.

See below for example:

edit with new link

Step 8:

After you’re finished with editing the article, click on Save Page to save your changes. Though you can see the changes immediately, but it will take some time to pass the moderation by Wikipedia moderators. Once, Wikipedia moderators think that your link is useful to that page, your link will stay longer in that Wikipedia page.

insert new link

Step 9:

Now, finally you got a backlink from Wikipedia. It’s time to reach other webmasters which you found through Ahrefs and Majestic for more links.

Reach out to the webmasters by using their Contact us or email form with the following message.

Subject: Broken Link found on (website.com)

What are Nofollow links? And their history

What are Nofollow links?

Nofollow is the value used for rel attribute in html for a tag. It was first proposed by Matt Cutts who is the head of Google’s spam team to combat link spam. In earlier days, people used to spam blogs with lot of irrelevant comments on numerous blogs for the sake of getting backlinks to their blogs or websites.

When this Nofollow value is used for rel attribute in a tag in html, it tells search engines like Google that the website which used the nofollow should not pass any value to the linking website.

This is the basic usage of nofollow value in a tag.

<a href=http://www.wikihow.com rel=”nofollow”>Wiki How</a>

In the above, the nofollow value is used for rel attribute in the a tag. This nofollow value is assigned for the link wikihow.com. For example, if this html code was used in my blog say in dheerajkumar.com.

It says that, Dheerajkumar.com is not willing to pass any value to the link wikihow.com, though it was hyperlinked in the website dheerajkumar.com. It does not want to pass any link juice to wikihow.com.

Increase in visibility of quality sites in Google:

Earlier, Google used to rank websites basing on the number of backlinks they have for their website. This has increased a lot of comment spam, because, by commenting on other blogs, you will be getting free backlinks. Therefore by knowing this, every webmaster started to comment on various blogs to get more links thinking that they can get ranked easily with more backlinks in Google.

Some advanced spammers, even started using spamming tools or bots which automatically comments on list of blogs. This has increased the comment spam a lot, like each blog which accepts comments automatically ended up with tens of thousands of comments which are commented by bots automatically. And therefore getting thousands of thousand backlinks to sites related to pharmacy and other spam sites which ranked in Google in 1st position for very high competitive keywords.

This has hurt many legitimate businesses a lot. So, finally, Google’s spam team head matt cutts introduced this nofollow attribute, which has solved this spam problem. Immediately, after the proposal of Nofollow attribute, many blogs started implementing this feature in their blogs. For WordPress blogging platform, by default all the comments will be no followed.

After the implementation of Nofollow, many spam sites which used to rank a lot with blog comments, suddenly lost their link values and hence their rankings got dropped.

According to Google, all links should be earned naturally. What spammers did here was, by using bots, they got thousands of backlinks hence they lost their rankings.

Page Rank Flow:

Nofollow tag is used by Search Engine Optimization professionals to control the flow of page rank. Since Google has suggested that, using nofollow will reduce the page rank flow from the incoming site to the outgoing site.

Suppose, if you are linking to Wikipedia.com from Msn.com with a nofollow link. Then, the page rank flow from Msn.com to Wikipedia.com is zero. That means, it won’t pass any page rank to Wikipedia.com when used with a nofollow link.

This applied to internal linking also. Some SEO professionals say that, for pages like About Us, Terms and Conditions, Privacy Policy, passing page rank to these pages is not necessary and recommend to nofollow these pages as well.

One must not be afraid of passing page rank from their website to others. But consider in passing link juice to only relevant sites. Some sites like Wikipedia nofollow all of its external links. And they say why they did that because, to avoid attracting spammers whose main intention is to get a link. Since, Wikipedia is a very popular website with very high authority, getting a dofollow link will get more link juice to their site. So, they produce low quality content in order to get a backlink. Since it is also a human edited content platform, they made all their external links nofollow to get only quality content.

Final Conclusion:

  • Nofollow all your affiliate links
  • If you are selling any text links, make sure you nofollow those links in order to not to get penalized.
  • Nofollow all irrelevant external and internal links in your website.
  • Only dofollow links which are related to your topic.

How to add nofollow to a link for SEO

Nofollow and dofollow are the most common heard phrases in SEO. If you consider your website as a valuable resource and wanted to get good amount of organic (search engine) traffic to your website. Then you should consider following the best practices of SEO in order to get good rankings for your website in search engines. For that, one of the best followed practice is using nofollow for your external non-relevant links.

Today I am going to show you how to add nofollow to your links.

You might get suggestions from lot of blogs saying that dofollow links are great way to help you boost your search engine rankings. Of course that is true, but not all dofollow links will help you to gain rankings and some dofollow links might harm you as well. So, you only need to get dofollow links from relevant and high authority websites. And in the same way, you should not link to non-relevant websites and low quality sites. What if, if you want to link to a non-relevant site? In that case, you should use this nofollow attribute. This will help search engines understand that, you are not willing to pass any link juice to non-relevant websites by using this nofollow attribute in your links.

How to add nofollow to your links?

In SEO, there are two techniques.

  1. On Page SEO
  2. Off page SEO

I will explain the above terms later in my coming articles, but you must properly do both SEO’s in order to get good rankings to your website. Linking to relevant and authoritative websites will increase your visibility in search engines. And at the same, you should nofollow non-relevant and low quality websites in order to not to get hurt your search engine rankings. Adding nofollow is considered as the best practice in on page SEO.

Here is how to add nofollow to your links.

By default your normal link’s html code will look like the following.

<a href=”http://www.dheerajkumar.com”>Dheeraj kumar </a>

And in order to nofollow the above link, you should add rel=”nofollow” at the end of the URL, like in the below

<a href=”http://www.dheerajkumar.com” rel=”nofollow”>Dheeraj kumar </a>

Editing in Blogs:

If you are trying to publish an article in WordPress or Blogger, you can simply nofollow your external links by adding rel=”nofollow” attribute to your links by editing the html of that post. For WordPress there are plugins available which automatically nofollow’s your external links. But I don’t that is a best practice in SEO. One should not be afraid in passing his website’s links juice to others. But like I said, you should only pass link juice to relevant sources and nofollow non-relevant sources.

What to do if you have lots of external links in a single page?

If you are having lot of external or outbound links in a single blog post or single page. You should consider in limiting your link juice to pass from your website to few external sites, but not all. Consider in passing link juice to only relevant and high authority websites and nofollow rest of the external links. In this way, Google will think that you are following the best practices of SEO and it will put your website in good search engine rankings.

For your affiliate links and advertisings, you should nofollow those affiliate links as they don’t come under relevant and high quality sites. Sites like moz.com, Searchengineroundtable.com etc are considered as high quality and relevant sites for my website. So, I would be glad to pass my link juice to those sources.

On-Page SEO Techniques 2016

On Page SEO Techniques which are important in 2016

SEO is important.

It does not matter what you do. If you are on the web, you need to know about SEO. It is equally important for e-commerce businesses, freelancers, internet marketers, and small businesses with an online presence.

After all, it is SEO that brings you passive organic traffic (completely free of cost!) and keeps your old content in front of your target audience.

But the thing with SEO is that it keeps changing and evolving. Search engines, such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo, keeps introducing new algorithms and updates that alter the way SEO works. This is why it is very important to keep yourself updated with the knowledge of latest SEO techniques, tips, tricks, and trends.

In this blog post, we are going to discuss the latest on-page SEO techniques for 2016. Excited? Let’s get started.

But let’s start from the top. So, if anyone of you doesn’t know what SEO is and how it works, you can easily understand what we are talking about.

What is SEO?

For anyone who does not know the basics of SEO, here is an excellent definition to get you started.

“SEO, which is also commonly known as Search Engine Optimization, is a process of optimizing your website with certain rules, tricks, and techniques. An optimized website then have a much better search engine ranking than its competitors and, therefore, drives more traffic and potential customers.”

One more thing.

Let me ask you a simple question.

What do you do when you need to search for something on the internet? You visit search engines, such as Google or Bing, right?

Let’s assume that you want to search for “online marketing companies in Chicago”. Here is what Google shows for that search query.

As you can see, some of the websites are ranked higher than the others. Moreover, there are hundreds of search results pages. But, as online users, we don’t really go there, do we? We usually browse the first couple of pages, and that’s it. This is why search engine optimization is so important.

If you have a business website that is ranked on, say, the 8th page of Google’s search results, nobody will find you. However, if your website is ranked on #1 on the first page, it stands a pretty good chance. According to a research, the top 3 positions in search engine results pages (SERPs) get 61.5% of all traffic visitors.

Now, that we have clarified the basic concepts of SEO, how search engine optimization works, and why it is so important, let’s discuss one more concept before we jump to our main topic.

On-Page SEO and Off-Page SEO

SEO techniques are divided into two broad categories: on-page SEO and off-page SEO.

On-page SEO includes the techniques that are employed on the front-end of a webpage. For example, keyword optimization, keyword density, H1, H2, H3 tags, keyword inclusion in the title of the page, URL optimization, etc. are some of the prominent on-page SEO techniques.

On the other hand, off-page SEO — as the name suggests — deals with the backend of the webpage. Off-page SEO primarily revolves around backlinks.

In this blog post, we are going to discuss all the latest on-page SEO techniques that are going to be very useful and important in 2016. And remember, if you keep using outdated on-page SEO techniques, you will not see any positive results. Furthermore, some outdated SEO techniques can even get you penalized by search engines, which will result in the loss of search engine rankings and a drop in traffic. So pay a lot of attention.

On-Page SEO Techniques for 2016

Here is a list of different on-page SEO techniques that will work in 2016.

1. Long-Form Content

There was a time when publishing 300-word blog posts used to be enough. There wasn’t much competition in the content marketing world, and 300-400 word blog posts had a good chance of ranking higher in the search engines.

However, that was almost two decades ago. Now, the SEO world is changed, and those 300-word blog posts don’t cut it.

Search engines — especially Google — prefer to see in-depth and information-rich content. If your website has shallow content on generic topics, it is less likely to achieve top search engine rankings. And the efficiency of all the tips and tricks that we will learn in this post depends on this single concept.

Content really is king!

And if you want to compete for the higher search engine positions, make sure that your foundation is perfect.

The bottom line is that do not write 300-word blog posts. They are not going to work in 2016. Instead, create more in-depth, comprehensive, and informative blog posts that are rich in content and total words. As a matter of fact, Google prefers 2000+ word blog posts. Such posts have a much better chance to be ranked on Google’s top 10 positions.

Here is a research that further validates this point.

Recently, SerpIQ analyzed 20,000 different keywords and the top 10 search engine results for those keywords. They found that each web page ranked on Google’s 1st page had at least 2000 words in it.

See the following image.

In other words, any blog post that had less than 2000 words it didn’t make it to Google’s 1st page. And that’s not a fluke. 20,000 keywords are as good a sample as any.

So, here is the tip.

It does not matter how you create your content in 2016. Make your content informative, comprehensive, and rich in content. Don’t just add fluff to hit the 2000-word mark; it won’t help. Instead, add enough value, information, and tips that it automatically becomes lengthier.

2. Keyword Optimization

On September 26, 2013, Google announce a major update for its search engine algorithm, i.e., the Google Hummingbird update. That update drastically changed the keyword-optimization strategies.

Now, the old keyword-optimization techniques do not work. Google is continuously evolving itself to become smarter and a context-based search engine.

Some SEO experts even claimed that keyword optimization would be dead after the Hummingbird update, but that is not the case. Keyword optimization is here to stay. It isn’t dead, but it is certainly changed.

Earlier, the on-page SEO tactic would have been to maintain a 3-5% keyword density. That’s not the case anymore. Instead, your focus should be on creating a natural post — without keyword stuffing or maintaining a certain amount of keyword density.

Google — as well as the other search engines — prefer to show natural, useful, and meaningful contents to their users. That’s what they rank on the top positions. According to Google itself, you should be creating content for your human readers, not for the search engine robots.

Furthermore, for as long as your primary keyword appears once in the text, and the content is genuinely useful and helpful to your audience, it will rank higher in the search engines.

Given said that there are a few keyword optimization tricks that you should learn:

  1. Make sure that the title of your page has the primary keyword in it.
  2. It helps if your primary keyword appears in the first 100 words of the text.
  3. Having your primary keyword wrapped in proper H1 and H2 tags may also greatly boost your search engine rankings.
  4. Apart from the title tag, the main keyword should also appear in the meta description. You will learn more about it in tip #5.
  5. Add credibility and context to your main keyword and post with LSI keywords. Let’s discuss it in detail.

3. LSI Keywords

LSI keywords have been gaining more and more popularity. In 2016, they are only going to become more famous and common.

What are LSI keywords? LSI refers to “Latent Semantic Indexing”.

That is too technical, right? Here is a much simpler explanation.

LSI keywords add context and meaning to your post. These are relevant keywords that are supposed to be used along with your main keyword. Search engines like to see LSI keywords in a blog post.

For example, if your main keyword is ‘Apple’, how do you think search engines will identify whether you are talking about Apple Inc. (the creator of iPhones) or the fruit that keeps the doctor away?

The answer is LSI keywords.

If your post is about Apple Inc., you can use the following LSI keywords to add more context and meaning to your post:

  • Steve Jobs
  • Tim Cook
  • iPhone
  • iPad
  • iOS
  • Mac
  • OSX
  • iCloud

These LSI keywords add context to your post and help search engines understand what your post is really about. Moreover, you should also use these LSI keywords to avoid using your main keyword too many times. Otherwise, that leads to over-optimization of keywords and a possible search engine penalty.

To find LSI keywords, use the following tools:

4. Long-Tail Keywords

As I mentioned earlier, the competition is getting tougher in the content marketing world. It is not easy to rank higher in the SERPs.

This is why you are going to need lots of long-tail keywords in 2016.

Basically, we divide keywords into two broad categories:

  • Head keywords
  • Long-tail keywords

For instance, “shoes” is a head keyword. On the other hand, “red Reebok shoes for men” is a long-tail keyword. It is much more targeted and specific. Generally speaking, long-tail keywords have 3, 4, or more words in them.

Head keywords show a lot of search volume, but you shouldn’t go after them. Why? Honestly speaking, because it is useless. It does not matter what you do and how you do it, you can’t rank for a popular head keyword.

However, you can rank for targeted long-tail keywords. Relatively speaking, that is much, much easier. Furthermore, long-tail keywords have their own benefits. The biggest of those benefits is that long-tail keywords have a much better conversion rates.

When compared with head keywords, long-tail keywords will show a low search volume. But it is always recommended to pursue those long-tail keywords, as you will not only get very targeted traffic, but you will also receive high-quality leads and a much better conversion rate.

5. Meta Description

This is another very important on-page SEO technique that will have a noticeable impact in 2016 and beyond.

Let’s see why it is important before we jump into the nitty-gritty details of how to optimize it.

As search engines are getting smarter, they are focusing more on user-experience. In order to do that, they are now looking on factors such as search engine click-through rates (CTRs) and exit-rate.

For instance, suppose if you have a webpage ranked on the 3rd position on Google’s 1st page. Now, for example, if 10 out of 100 users who see that webpage clicks on it, it gets a 10% CTR. At the same time, if a webpage that is ranked on the 8th position on Google’s 1st page gets a CTR of 80%, Google is going to notice that.

It might mean to Google that the webpage ranked on #8 is offering much better value to its searchers. As a result, eventually, that webpage will get a promotion. And because the webpage at #3 was constantly getting the lowest CTR, it might get demoted in the search engine rankings.

Got the concept?

The same rule applies if traffic visitors instantly quit a webpage after opening it. Search engines notice that, too. If most users instantly quit a website after landing it through search engines, it sends a negative signal that the site isn’t very useful to them.

The on-page SEO technique for it is to create meaningful and relevant meta descriptions and meta titles.

Ideally, the meta description should have your primary keywords. It should also be meaningful, descriptive, and very engaging. Here is an example.

Good meta descriptions ensure that search engine users already know what they will be getting on the other side. This is also why well-crafted titles are so important. They lure the readers in (resulting in higher CTR) and keep them engaged (ensuring that they do not quit right away). All these factors lead to higher search engine rankings.

Moreover, you can also use LSI keywords in the meta descriptions of your blog posts. Here is an example of that.

Final Words

The world of search engine optimization changes at a rapid pace. If you are to remain competitive, you will have to adapt to the latest SEO techniques.

In this post, we discussed the latest on-page SEO techniques for 2016. Make sure that you implement these on-page SEO techniques in 2016 and beyond, and we will keep you updated if any new techniques, tips, or tricks become important.

YouTube Ranking Factors

How to rank your YouTube video with YouTube Ranking Factors

YouTube is the second largest search engine in the entire web coming after Google. And according to Alexa it is ranked 3rd globally that means it is the third most visited website in the entire world.

According to quantcast, it is the second most visited website in the United States.

And according to Similarweb, it is ranked 3rd globally. See below for its statistics.

YouTube is viewed not only for entertainment purposes but also for their educational purposes. YouTube is getting more searches on “how to”. More and more people are searching for how to make a recipe, how to fix hair, how to kiss and so on in YouTube. As we all know “Actions speak louder than words”, so people are preferring to watch videos for “how to” things rather than reading a text.

According to data released by Google, not only there is an increase of number of searches for “how to” videos, but also increase in the videos viewed on “how to” content has grown to more than 100 million hours.

The number of “how to” searches in YouTube are increasing significantly every year by 70%. So far this year people have viewed around 100 million hours of “how to” videos in YouTube according to report revealed by Google.

Some of the most popular how to search terms are below

How to remove wallpaper

How to decorate your bedroom

How to videos on prom hair

Since, YouTube videos can also be ranked in Google, you can get even more traffic to your videos if it was well ranked.

Your videos can also get traffic from video search engine in Google.

Google recently started providing YouTube data in Google Trends. Google trends provides the list of trending topics, now it has added YouTube data also, that means people can search trending topics in YouTube too. Since, it has significant amount of traffic, Google Trends has incorporated YouTube’s data in it. So it is very important to have your presence in YouTube which will help you to get more visitors both from YouTube and Google search.

YouTube Search Results:

Similar to Google Search Engine Results, YouTube also uses the same pattern for displaying the search results, like by displaying Sponsored Ads at the top of the search results followed by normal results.

You can also rank your YouTube videos in related videos which will bring good traffic too.

YouTube Ranking Factors:

The following are the YouTube ranking factors which will help you increase your video presence in YouTube search results.

Meta Data:

  • Title:
The first and important ranking factor for YouTube video is its Title. Your video title needs to be exactly to what people are searching for. Suppose, if your video is about reviewing a Samsung Galaxy S6, then your video title needs to be Samsung Galaxy S6 Review. If your video content does not contain what people are looking for, then people won’t like your video and therefore your video won’t get ranked. Competing for general terms will also won’t help you to get ranked. Suppose, the title Samsung Galaxy S6 is a broad keyword, setting your title for your video won’t help you to get ranked for that keyword. You need to be more descriptive about your title, so that people can find what they want with your video.
  • Description: Your video description also plays an important role in factors affecting your video ranking in YouTube. I have seen many videos with a url in its description, those videos don’t do well in YouTube. You need to write a good description for your video, write about 400-500 word description for your video.
Talk about your video, write about what your video is all about.
Many people just use a short description with stuffed keywords and a url in description. These videos don’t perform well in YouTube search. As we all know “Content is the King“, so you need to fill your description with good content. Make sure you use your keyword and provide a realistic description for your video. Include a link to your website as apart of call-to-action in the description, so that after watching the video, they will click on your link in the description if they find it useful.

  • Tags: Tags for your videos also plays an important role in ranking your YouTube video. You need to have atleast 10 tags, unlike Google, YouTube is a bit different when it comes keywords. You need to include both singular and plural terms of your keywords. Otherwise, if you include only plural term, then YouTube don’t even consider ranking your video for singular term. So, make sure you include both versions as your tags. By doing keyword research, use the keywords which match your video content. Make sure, you use relevant keywords as your tags.

  • Transcript: Transcription also helps you increase your video presence in YouTube search results. Many people ignore this or don’t know about this feature, but it is also one of the ranking factors for YouTube videos as it is used to rank your YouTube videos. If you ever read the transcription generated automatically machine? It sucks with lot of mistakes. So, take some time to write your own transcript for your video and upload it in YouTube. Some tests have even proved that, a video got ranked with the keywords present in Transcript even though those keywords were not present in its title, description or tags. So, providing transcript will help you rank your YouTube video.

  • Channel Authority: For ranking your YouTube videos, YouTube also considers your Channel Authority. YouTube is looking for channels with good authority, who regularly uploads good videos and ranks for its terms. If you have a channel with good authority means, chances are more for your video to get ranked well when compared with others. It will be pretty easy for you to rank your new videos, if you already have a channel with good authority. But there are people who don’t have a channel at all but still rank their videos in top in YouTube which I am going to reveal in the next step.

Second part of YouTube Ranking Factors:

What we’ve discussed so far are the first part of YouTube Ranking factors, there are other factors you need to consider when trying to rank your YouTube video.

Keep on reading to know more about YouTube ranking factors

You are not the only one who is trying to rank your video for your desired keywords. There will be other competitors who are trying their best to rank for the same keywords you were trying for. Ranking a YouTube video is not only about having an awesome title, description and tags. You need to have more, what we have discussed so far are the first part of ranking your video. In the second part, you need to get engagement for your videos in order for them to rank well.

Views with high retention rate: YouTube considers ranking your video more and more if you get more and more views. But in order to rank you need to get views, but in order to get views, you need to rank. It’s a like a loop. But, that’s how Google is going to determine whether to rank your video or not. If your video was watched by a user and If he watched till the end of the video, then Google will think like, the user has watched the video till the end, that means, he liked the video till the end and he wants to rank this video, so Google will automatically considers your video is a good one and will rank your video if you get more and more views. If your video was watched only like 10 secs, then Google considers your video as cheap quality because people are not watching it till the end. So, if you have a good quality informational video, people will automatically like it and watch it till the end.

You can see the reports of your video’s retention rate in your YouTube analytics.

Here is the sample report for one of my videos.

If your videos were watched 100% means, the chances are more that your video will be ranked high than others. If you have a poor retention rate means, you need to work on your video and try to give something valuable to your users, so that they can watch it till the end.

“The more quality your views are the better it ranks”

Inbound Links: Yes, you heard it right, inbound links, is also one of the YouTube ranking factor. For people who know SEO, inbound links are very important for ranking their website, and YouTube is also considering inbound links for ranking a YouTube video. The more inbound links you have for your website, the better it ranks in Google, in the same way, the more inbound links you have for your Channel and for your YouTube video, the better it ranks in YouTube search results. So, try to get more natural links to your YouTube video, by sharing it in social networks and social bookmarking sites. If people like your video, they will automatically link your YouTube video in their blogs and in their social network accounts.

Try to include your YouTube video everywhere like when sending an email to your friends include your YouTube video in your email. When writing a press release, try to include your YouTube video in that press release, as the press release will be picked up by many outlets and there by you will get more natural links to your YouTube video which will help your video to get ranked high in YouTube.

Social Shares: YouTube also considers social shares as one of the ranking factors. The more social shares you have for your video, the better it ranks in YouTube. YouTube has inbuilt functionality to share your YouTube videos to other social network platforms. First of all share your videos to your social networking accounts and hope they will be re shared by your friends to their friends and goes on.

Share your videos on your Facebook, Twitter, Google + and other social media profiles to get more engagement like shares which will help your video to get ranked high than others.

Embeds: Getting more embeds for your YouTube videos will help your video to get ranked high. As, Embeds is also a ranking factor which YouTube considers when ranking a video.

After you have uploaded your video in YouTube, you need to work on your video to get it ranked well. For that, you need to get embeds of your video. In order to get embeds, you need to share your YouTube video in social bookmarking sites, embed your video in press releases, share it in emails, share it in your social networking accounts, embed it in your personal blogs and approach related blogs for your video and ask them if they could embed your video in their blogs.

Comments & Video Responses: YouTube also considers the number of comments and video responses when ranking a video. If your video has good number of natural comments from different users and video responses from other videos, then YouTube will think like, since people loved what they saw, so they are showing their engagement with comments and video responses and they want your video to be ranked.
